This postcard was a little fun for me because I have spent the last 24 years living in Alaska and in the last 24 years, I have never been to Juneau. Definitely on my bucket list!
Mendenhall Glacier was originally known as “the Glacier Behind the Town” or “the Glacier Behind the Little Lake before being renamed in 1891 in honor of Thomas Corwin Mendenhall.

In the picture below, you can really see how much Mendenhall Glacier has receded through the years.

The postcard was sent to Mrs. William Stromatt who was residing in Tulare, California at the time, sent by Elizabeth in 1940.
Thursday – July 18 – Ketchikan, Alaska
Dear Mrs. Stromatt,
This trip is perfect in every way. We hate to think it will soon be over. Everything exceed our expectations. The scenery is unbelievably beautiful and there are so many different kinds.
Sincerely, Elizabeth

I was able to track down Mrs. Edith Stromatt in Tulare, California.
According to census reports, Edith was still living with her parents when the 1930 census was taken. She was working as a nurse.

Edith was married to William Stromatt in 1938. I can’t find a 1940 census for either of them.
There appears to be a few Edith Riley’s in the Tulare area in the 1920s-1940s, so I can’t be 100% sure that I have the right person. I’m fairly certain that I do have two different people. If not, then Edith was married previously, prior to marrying William Stromatt. That marriage lasted less than a year.

Despite being about 10 years older than his wife, William outlived her.
