From Harrisburg to Sedar Falls

Postcard of Harrisburg, PA. around the 1930s-1940s vs. around 2022

This postcard appears to be from someone named Giulia…I think. I wasn’t able to find any relation between them and the recipient of the postcard on Ancestry.com. Giulia is the Italian spelling of Julia so it’s possible that they immigrated and many records during that time were lost or destroyed in World War II.

To: Mrs. Chris Anderson (Sedar Falls, Iowa)

From: Giulia (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania)

Postmarked: 12/9/1943

The postcard reads: Dear brother, we are having a real spring day (in December?) Getting ready to rain the week-end, I suppose. How are you feeling? Be sure and take care of yourself (aww!). The capitol is across the street from here. Love, Giulia.

I’m finding that the postcards and stamps hold up really well. The color is beautiful, time has not really aged them. The writing, however, is another story. Pen ink seems to do okay, but if it’s pencil…no…..

There wasn’t anything interesting going on in Iowa or Pennsylvania on the date that this postcard was sent, but WWII was in full swing and according to Sarah Sundin (https://www.sarahsundin.com/today-in-world-war-ii-history-dec-9-1943/80 years ago – Dec. 9, 1943: in Italy, British Eighth Army secures Moro River beachead near Ortona.

US airfield opens at Torokina on Bougainville in the Solomon Islands, only 220 miles from major Japanese base at Rabul
