30 Days of Genealogy: Day 12

A family myth

This was kind of a hard one. There are some not so great family myths that are floating around out there but I don’t think I’ll share those. There is too much hate and anger going on in the world right now and I’m choosing to focus on the positive things.

One thing I remember hearing growing up is that we were Irish, French Canadian, and some of the family may have been gypsy’s. All of this on my maternal side of the family.

Great-grandfather, Charlie, is in the back row on the left

This picture was colorized through Ancestry. You can’t see it very well, but my great-grandfather, Charlie Martin, had red hair. We were always told that there was some Irish ancestry on his side of the family, but I have not found any and neither my mom, my uncle, or my DNA results have 0 Irish.

We were also told that we had Native American blood, but it does not show up on the DNA.

Arthur Waldo (older man sitting) + his daughter Ida Martin sitting next to him

Arthur Waldo was married to Selma Gullickson and they had two kids before she died from tuberculosis when the kids were very young. Arthur was allegedly a bigamist. He also attempted to enroll his two daughters in an “Indian” school, but was unsuccessful. If we are Native American, it would be from Ida and her mother, Selma Gullickson’s side of the family, but I have nothing to prove this.

So nothing exciting when it comes to family myths. I’m sure they’re out there, I just haven’t discovered them yet.
